Nelly Furtado donating $1M to Free the Children charity

Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado says she is donating $1 million to the Free the Children charity.

The Juno and Grammy Award winner says her donation comes from the $1 million she was paid to perform at a private concert.

In February, Furtado said she would donate to charity the $1 million she was paid to perform in Italy for members of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s family in 2007.

Furtado announced where her donation was being directed Tuesday at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre at the We Day youth empowerment event, which was organized by the Canadian co-founders of Free the Children, Craig and Marc Kielburger.

Furtado’s donation will go towards building a girls school in Kenya and a Free the Children program supporting girls in the Middle East and North Africa.
