Maclean’s movie reviews: Breakaway, 50/50

This week, Brian D. Johnson from Maclean’s magazine watches the latest new releases, including Breakaway a hockey movie starring Brampton talent Russell Peters; and 50/50, a cancer comedy (yes, really.)

“I’m sad to say Breakaway is not the great Canadian hockey movie we’ve all been waiting for,” Johnson said.

Breakway, starring Peters and Rob Lowe (from television’s Parks and Recreation), tracks a young Indian boy living in Toronto as he pursues his dreams of making it to the NHL.

“Although it’s a formulaic film…I gotta say, it works with its own modest ambitions. Your heart goes out to them,” he said.

Johnson had high praise for 50/50. At 27, Joseph-Gordon Levitt’s character Adam is diagnosed with cancer — an unlikely source of laughs.

“This is a cancer comedy,” Johnson described.

“That is a genre that I don’t think there’s any previous examples of…I think it’s really worth seeing,” he added.

Check out Johnson’s thoughts on both films in the video.
