Toronto vital signs report finds growing gap between rich and poor

“The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”

It’s an oft-repeated proverb, and one that accurately sums up the findings of The Toronto Community Foundation’s annual vital signs report.

Among the report’s key findings:

  • Rich neighbourhoods have doubled over the last 35 years.
  • The number of middle income neighbourhoods have shrunk to 30%
  • The number of low and very low income neighbourhoods is up from 20% to over 50%.

“By 2025, 60 per cent of the neighbourhoods in the city of Toronto will be low or very low income neighbourhoods and that’s something we’ve really got to address quickly,” said Rahul Bhardwaj, Pres. Toronto Community Foundation.

“There’s over 1 million people, two thirds of which are visible minority, living in low or very low income neighbourhoods.”
