Damage from Ajax townhouse fire to top $1M

No one was hurt when a new townhouse complex went up in flames Monday night in Ajax. Damage from the massive blaze is expected to exceed $1 million.

The fire is considered suspicious, the Fire Marshall’s office said Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the scene on Formosa Avenue, near Rossland and Salem roads, around 10 p.m. Crews managed to get the blaze under control by midnight.

“My wife looked out her window and saw the house in flames and she …told us to get out of the house,” resident Wayne Armstrong said.

“By the time we moved the cars, the whole house was engulfed,” he added.

Six unoccupied townhomes still under construction were destroyed. Six nearby homes that were finished and occupied had to be evacuated due to the intense heat and flying embers.

Investigators will be at the scene Tuesday morning to determine the cause. There was no gas or hydro hook-ups in the home, the Fire Marshall’s office said, and residents were due to move in in January.
