TTC bus driver charged following fatal crash

A TTC bus driver has been charged following a fatal crash in August, police confirmed to CityNews.ca on Wednesday.

William Ainsworth, 51, is accused of criminal negligence causing death and possession of cannabis. He appeared in court Wednesday.

Ainsworth was relieved of duty on Sept. 1. At the time of the crash, police said Ainsworth was not tested for drugs because he didn’t appear to be under the influence of anything.

Jadranka Petrova, 43, died when the bus collided with a large flatbed truck carrying a crane on Aug. 30 on Lawrence Avenue East. The crash also injured 13 other passengers.

Both the bus and the flatbed truck were travelling westbound when the bus rear-ended the truck near Don Valley Parkway, police said.

Petrova’s family is planning a lawsuit targeting the transit body.
