Man dies after basement apartment fire

A 42-year-old man has died after suffering severe burns in a house fire.

The victim, and a woman, were both rushed to hospital after a fire broke out in a basement apartment in North York late Monday.

The male suffered third-degree burns to approximately 90 per cent of his body after flames broke out at 103 Reiner Rd., near Bathurst and Sheppard.  He later died in hospital.

A woman in her 30s suffered second and third-degree burns to her back, arms and hands.

They were sleeping when the flames erupted and the woman realized she was on fire.

Firefighters were called to the home around 11:30 p.m. and were able to quickly knock down the blaze. A family of five that lived in the house above the apartment escaped without injuries.

There’s no word yet on a damage estimate or a cause.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Toronto Police Service and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
