Ontario power rates will go up Nov. 1

It will soon cost residents and small business consumers more to turn on theirs lights because electricity costs are set to rise.

Beginning Nov. 1, the average monthly bill for consumers on smart meters (time of use pricing) will rise by $2.11 or 1.8 per cent, the Ontario Energy Board said.

Those on tiered pricing will see a monthly increase of 20 cents or 0.2 per cent.

The board said despite the increase, the total consumers have paid for hydro has fallen in the year ending November 2011, because of a 10 per cent rebate the province has provided under the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit program.
