The GTA is getting walloped by heavy winds and rain Wednesday night, with some areas of Toronto and the surrounding region without power.

There are reports of outages in many areas of the city – High Park, Roncesvalles, Jane and Bloor, and the Highway 403 and Winston Churchill area are among those in the dark.

High winds are also wreaking havoc in the downtown core. Police have temporarily shut down a section of Adelaide Street after a car was struck by falling glass, believed to be from a condo building above.

No one was injured in the incident.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Toronto and a large swath of southwestern Ontario. Up to 50 mm of rain is expected to fall.

“The storm is still approaching late Wednesday afternoon. Most of the rain is expected to hit west of Kitchener.

“The bulk of the rain is coming in after midnight and the peak of the winds is coming in after 8 p.m,” meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said

It was a blustery day with sustained winds between 40 and 50 km/h with gusts up to 70 km/h. Wind warnings are in effect in Burlington, Oakville and Hamilton, where gusts are expected to kick up to 90 km/h.
