Broadway musical Fela! is coming to Toronto

The hit Broadway musical Fela! is coming to Toronto and will premiere at the Canon Theatre on Oct. 25, 2011.
The show, which picked up three Tony awards in 2010, including best choreography, tells the true story of Nigerian musican Fela Kuti.
“He was in the limelight…he was a rock star to a large degree. Even though his music was larger than life, so were his ideas,” star Sahr Ngaujah said.
Kuti was a pioneer of Afrobeat music as well as a political activist who advocated for a united African republic.
“We created one particular story that puts people inside of Fela’s club, like in the 70s, on a night that would basically be his last. It’s intense, it’s exciting,” Ngaujah said.
