‘Occupy’ protest hits Toronto’s streets Saturday

The Occupy Toronto demonstration appears to be gaining momentum, hitting Toronto’s streets with a bigger, more vocal protest Saturday.

The crowd, estimated to be nearly a thousand participants, started the day with a march from the home base at St. James Park to Nathan Phillips Square around 2:30 p.m.

Protesters were also joined by NDP MP Olivia Chow.

The group continued to march through the city’s downtown core and financial district before eventually returning to St. James Park shortly before 5 p.m.

While there were no politicians working at City Hall Saturday, the Occupy Toronto protest will be on the council agenda next week.

Councillors Shelley Carroll and Gord Perks will be proposing a motion for council to endorse the peaceful protests.

Saturday marks the one-week anniversary of the Occupy Toronto marches.
