Toronto homicide rate drops to lowest level in 12 years

Toronto saw a 13 per cent drop in homicides, reaching its lowest level since 1999, according to a new Statistics Canada report.

Despite an overall drop in gun-related killings, one-half of all homicides in Toronto involved firearms.

The homicide rate in Canada has dropped to its lowest level since 1966.

Across the nation, there were 554 recorded murders in 2010, 56 fewer than the year before. Most of the country’s murders took place in the Western provinces and territories.

Toronto ranked fifth on the list of gang-related homicides among major cities behind Winnipeg, Edmonton, Hamilton and Vancouver.

For the second year in a row Thunder Bay recorded the highest homicide rate.

The latest crime stats come at a time when the Conservative government is looking to pass Bill C-10, which combines 9 tough-on-crime bills into one.
