Maclean’s movie reviews: Tower Heist, Like Crazy

This week, Brian D. Johnson from Maclean’s magazine watches the latest new releases, including the action flick Tower Heist and the romantic comedy Like Crazy.

Tower Heist tells the tale of a building manager who has fallen victim to a Ponzi scheme – and the culprit lives in his building. The manager, played by Ben Stiller, teams up with a few friends to steal back their money.

“A lot of people are looking at this as Eddie Murphy’s comeback vehicle, but it’s not really an Eddie Murphy movie,” Johnson said.

“It’s a Ben Stiller movie and Eddie’s kind of like the guest star. His role, like the movie itself, fizzles in the third act,” he added.

If you’re looking for something a little different, Johnson highly recommends Like Crazy.

“You really feel like you’re right inside this relationship between Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin.  She’s on a student visa, she overstays her welcome, and is banned from the country. It’s a long-distance relationship that starts to feel the strain,” he explained.

Johnson praised the intimacy of the movie, which had to do more with the characters emotions than their actions.

“Life is unfolding exactly as it does and you can’t believe you’re allowed to watch it. Not that it’s full of sex or anything, but that it’s the way they talk when they’re in bed or preparing to have a fight.”
