Preliminary hearing starts Monday for alleged cop killer

A preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing Toronto Police Sgt. Ryan Russell begins Monday.

Richard Kachkar is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder after Russell was struck by a snowplow on Jan. 12. The 35-year-old officer left behind a wife and young son.

Police allege Kachkar stole the snowplow from the Dundas and Parliament area and then drove it across town. Russell was struck and killed near Avenue and Davenport roads. Officers managed to stop the vehicle on Keele Street, near Humberside.

Kachkar’s preliminary hearing is expected to continue into December.
