Fire guts Scarborough home

Four people were taken to hospital after flames erupted in a home near Highway 401 and Midland Avenue Thursday morning.

When firefighters arrived at 67 Marilake Dr. around 1:30 a.m. the house was already engulfed in flames and some family members were coming out of the front door. There were some tense moments when firefighters had a hard time communicating with two residents—a mother and father—who are deaf and were trying to locate other family members feared to be trapped in the house.

The other four residents—two grandparents and two teenage boys— were found in the backyard.

“My step-son and his wife are both deaf-mute and we couldn’t scream, we couldn’t do anything to call their attention,” resident Victor DeOliveira said. “I couldn’t go inside the house because the flames were huge so I was hoping that they managed to escape from another way.”

Two of the adults were taken to hospital with burns and the two teenage boys suffered smoke inhalation. Some police officers were also assessed for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Investigators are now trying to determine what caused the fire. The residents believe it started in the garage.
