Students remember World War II veterans

Toronto students paid tribute to World War II veterans who studied at their school at a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday.

A plaque honouring 250 Maurice Cody Public School students who served in that war still hangs in the hallways and beside it is a second plaque, with the names of 24 students who died in combat.

The ceremony also paid tribute to those who have served more recently. For student Jacob Saunders, he was there for his father Major Adam Saunders, who served in Bosnia.

“I’m proud to have a dad like him, to have him come to my school and explain to people what Remembrance Day is about,” Saunders said.

“What I learned from my service was how lucky we are to be Canadians and live here,” Maj. Saunders said.

“That is my message to them, how fortunate we are to be living in this country.”
