Occupy Toronto protesters applaud emergency crews after early-morning visit

Occupy Toronto protesters applauded emergency crews after an early-morning visit on Monday.

Fire fighters showed up at St. James Park around 3:30 a.m. to examine a campfire.  Demonstrators said it was a First Nations sacred fire and then linked arms around the fire, preventing crews from extinguishing it.

“The fire’s not unsupervised,” a protester told fire crews, who agreed and then left the park, allowing the fire to burn.

Demonstrators applauded the firefighters, thanking them for a peaceful resolution.

Last week, Mayor Rob Ford suggested the Occupy Toronto camp at St. James Park should be dismantled. His spokeswoman Adrienne Batra released a statement Sunday saying while the city is monitoring the situation, it is standing by its position.

The online activist group Anonymous has threatened to target the city if Ford dismantles the camp. The group has hacked into the MasterCard and Sony websites, among others.

Anonymous said Toronto would be “removed from the Internet.”
