NDP bill seeks to remove HST from home heating bills

Ontario’s NDP will be pushing for the provincial portion of the HST to be removed from home heating bills when the legislature resumes next week.

Rarely does a private member’s bill become law, but NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said the minority government situation at Queen’s Park may change that, since the combined opposition has the advantage.

The New Democrats said removing the HST would save families $100 a year, but it would also cost the government $350-million in lost revenues.

Horwath is hoping the Progressive Conservatives will support the bill, since they also had promised to tackle rising home heating bills during the election campaign.

Horwath did not approach Tory Leader Tim Hudak to co-sponsor the bill, but he said he’d support such a bill as long as the relief is immediate.
