Mother in custody after child falls from 6th floor balcony

A three-year-old girl is in hospital with life-threatening injuries and her mother is in custody, after the child fell from a sixth-floor balcony in Scarborough early Thursday morning.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. at an apartment building on Midland Avenue, near Eglinton.

The girl’s 24-year-old mother, who had been out on the balcony naked, was taken into custody, the injured girl’s great-grandmother confirmed with CityNews.

“She loves her baby very, very much,” the great-grandmother, who didn’t want to be identified, said.  “When I’m around I can see how she treats the baby…and the child is everything to her.”

“I don’t really know what happened, I’m just stunned.”

Paramedics say the child was breathing, but unconscious, when she was taken to SickKids hospital. She was undergoing surgery for massive head injuries.

“Either she fell or she was pushed,” Const. Tony Vella told CityNews.

“Police are currently investigating … We are going through the entire apartment building, looking for any cameras.”

A woman named Diane, who lives directly above the unit, said she has had problems before with her downstairs neighbours.

“It was just very noisy during the night,” she said. “It wouldn’t be the first time. I’ve been woken up several times before by the people below. I have heard the mother several times screaming off her balcony in the past about ‘Repent. Repent. The end of the world is coming.’”

The area was briefly closed to traffic and has since reopened.

The girl’s great-grandmother is now praying she’ll recover.

“She’s a very happy little girl, very friendly.  I just hope she’ll be okay.”
