Cosburn teacher remains in custody on child porn charges

An elementary school teacher accused of child pornography offences made a brief court appearance Friday and was remanded in custody.

James Robert Coulter, 41, will be back before a judge on Tuesday.

Coulter works at East York’s Cosburn Middle School where he taught a Grade 7/8 split class. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) said Friday the charges do not involve any students from the school.

TDSB spokeswoman Zoya McGroarty told CityNews that Coulter has been suspended with pay until further notice, and a meeting will be held for parents on Monday night.

In a letter sent home to parents on Thursday, the school’s principal Troy Langevine said, “We do not take these allegations lightly…Coulter will remain away from school pending the outcome of this matter.”

On Thursday, Toronto police searched Coulter’s home near Yonge Street and Yonge Boulevard.

He was charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography and attempting to access child pornography.

“It’s disturbing, you always hate to hear things like that at any school,” said parent Lisa Jeffrey.

Police say they are continuing their investigation.

“We are urging anyone who had any contact with (him), we want to hear from you,” said P.C. Tony Vella.

Anyone with information regarding James Robert Coulter is asked to contact the Toronto Police Service, Child Exploitation Section at 416-808-8500, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637), or Leave A Tip on Facebook.
