Woman charged after child falls from 6th floor balcony

Toronto police have charged a 24-year-old woman with attempted murder after a child fell from a sixth-floor balcony in Scarborough last week.

The three-year-old girl is still in hospital after the Nov. 17 incident. It happened at 4:30 a.m. at an apartment building on Midland Avenue, near Eglinton.

The injured girl’s great-grandmother, who didn’t want to be identified, told CityNews the woman is the child’s mother. Police have not confirmed that, and have not disclosed her name.

A woman named Diane, who lives directly above the unit, said she has had problems before with her downstairs neighbours.

“It was just very noisy during the night,” she said. “It wouldn’t be the first time. I’ve been woken up several times before by the people below. I have heard the mother several times screaming off her balcony in the past about ‘Repent. Repent. The end of the world is coming.’”
