Daily Bread kicks off holiday food drive

The Daily Bread Food Bank has launched its fundraising campaign to help families struggling with hunger over the winter months.

The Holiday Drive campaign kicked off the 5th annual Food Sort Challenge on Wednesday afternoon with 100 volunteers at the Daily Bread Food Bank at Islington and Lakeshore.

Seven teams of ten people are competing to sort through 3,000 pounds of non-perishable foods.

The fundraiser’s Fall Drive in October had a shortfall of 140,000 pounds of food and $85,000.

This year’s goal will be to raise 1.2 million pounds of food and $1.2 million by Jan. 4, 2012.

“It will be a challenge but I know that we can get there,” Daily Bread Food Bank executive director Gail Nyberg told CityNews.

She added this year’s goal was a realistic one, given that the food bank reached its goal of $1 million and one million pound of food last year.

Citytv is also helping with its annual Spirit of the Season event on Dec. 16 and a tree sale by Breakfast TV on Dec. 9.
