20 years later: Remembering rock icon Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, died 20 years ago today.

He was 45 when he died of AIDS-related pneumonia on Nov. 24, 1991.

Mercury was known for his unique voice and for writing some of the greatest hits of all time: Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions and We Will Rock You.

The Zanzibar-born singer was constantly pushing boundaries. Mercury effortlessly rocked sequence ensembles and body suits while giving memorable performances at shows for years.

Two decades after losing the talented artist his music can still be heard on radios and at sports stadiums.

Queen released 18 No. 1 albums and 18 No. 1 singles, making it one of the world’s best-selling music bands.

In 2007, Queen was voted the greatest British band of all time, beating out the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
