Lady Gaga ‘appears’ at Etobicoke school assembly

Students at the Etobicoke School for the Arts (ESA) had a surprise guest at an anti-bullying assembly Friday: Lady Gaga appeared via video.

Student council president Jacques St. Pierre, who helped to organize Friday’s assembly, had reached out to the pop star in October, and she sent back a video thanking him for his efforts to end discrimination.

“I want to thank you for being such a strong advocate for the LGBT community,” Lady Gaga said in the video.

“There should be more little monsters like you,” she added, referring to the nickname of her large fan base.

“I went to a Catholic elementary school in Oakville and I loved theatre and I got bullied, got called gay and a fag for that,” St. Pierre said.

“It was a weird, lonely, feeling…but things got so much better at ESA. I would tell kids it does get better.”

The assembly also featured performances from students about homophobia, racism, sexism and body image sensitivity.  Representatives from the Toronto District School Board were at the assembly, and St. Pierre hopes they’ll bring his message to other schools.
