Small quake behind booming sound in Burlington

A small earthquake caused the booming noise reported by some residents in Burlington, Ont., early Monday morning.

Natural Resources Canada confirms it was a 2.3-magnitude quake centred under Lake Ontario about seven kilometres east of the city that caused the big bang reported around 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Several people contacted the CityNews newsroom Monday morning wanting to know what caused the strange noise. About a dozen others contacted Halton Regional Police.

Natural Resources Canada said Lake Ontario experiences about five to 10 small quakes every year.
