Tiger-Cats axe head coach Bellefeuille

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have fired head coach Marcel Bellefeuille, sportsnet.ca has learned.

Bellefeuille was thought to be safe after leading the franchise to a playoff win and an appearance in the CFL East Division final.

But a pitiful three-point offensive effort in Winnipeg, coupled with an underachieving 8-10 season were the daggers for the Canadian-born head coach, who had previous pro stops in Montreal and Saskatchewan.

The Ottawa native was dismissed Wednesday, a day after the organization held its football operation personnel meetings.

It is believed Tiger-Cats president Scott Mitchell, who gave Bellefeuille a vote of confidence to Sportsnet as recently as last Friday, met with general manager Bob O’Billovich on Wednesday morning to decide the coach’s fate.

Bellefeuille was the 20th head coach in franchise history, succeeding Charlie Taaffe, first in an interim role midway through the 2008 season, then full-time at the conclusion of that year. He signed a contract extension in the spring of 2010.
