WestJet flight diverted after man allegedly utters bomb threat

A Toronto-bound WestJet flight made an unscheduled landing in Thunder Bay Saturday night after a man on board allegedly uttered a bomb threat.

Thunder Bay police said the 27-year-old passenger became agitated and made the threat, but the crew restrained him. The plane landed at Thunder Bay International Airport just after 5 p.m., and officers arrested him.

The man, a Portuguese citizen, was taken to a local hospital for a medical assessment.

The other 118 people were taken off the plane, and the OPP’s explosive disposal unit searched the cabin and bags.

The passengers, who were coming from Vancouver, are expected to resume their trip to Toronto Sunday.

Thunder Bay police, the OPP and the RCMP continue to investigate.

Earlier Saturday, another WestJet flight from Vancouver to Toronto turned back because of a smell from excess lubricant. That flight was delayed about six hours.
