Hwy. 401 reopens in Oshawa after early-morning crash

A tractor-trailer crash and fire forced police to shut down the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Oshawa for several hours Tuesday morning, causing serious headaches for commuters.

The lanes between Harmony and Stevenson roads fully reopened around 1:30 a.m.—about 12 hours after the accident.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on the eastbound lanes near Simcoe Street and damaged the Albert Street bridge. The highway will be closed until late morning because crews have to inspect the structure.

The rig slammed into the bridge and it then burst into flames. The driver and passenger escaped without injury.
