Father told police infant son died

A Woodbridge man charged with abducting his infant son told York Region police the baby died on or about Nov. 1.

Police say they have not been able to confirm Ricky Doodhnaught’s statement given on Friday. Const. Rebecca Boyd told CityNews baby George would have been about four weeks old at the time.

Doodhnaught, 31, wearing shorts and what appeared to be a basketball jersey, appeared briefly in a Newmarket court Tuesday. The defence asked for more time because of the “exceptional new developments” and the case was put over until Dec. 30.

His lawyer Michael Lacy said, “We don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on what he told police or the nature of the statement he gave to police.”

He said police are investigating and, “we don’t want to do anything to compromise that investigation.”

A neighbour told CityNews police have been on his Vaughan street since Friday, and they’re still there.

Doodhnaught is charged with abduction in contravention of a custody order, and wasn’t co-operating with police.

He could face more charges, police said Tuesday, but they didn’t elaborate.

Doodhnaught is also facing two unrelated counts of theft under $5,000 in connection to alleged gas thefts.

The man’s 60-year-old aunt Rita Nankali and 21-year-old cousin Victoria Munian are facing charges of obstruction and accessory after the fact. Another relative Susan Munian, 39, faced those same two charges.

Police and workers from the Children’s Aid Society went to Doodhnaught’s and his wife’s Vaughan home with a court order to take their two children on Nov. 24. The couple fled to a hotel, police said, where the mother was arrested on unrelated and outstanding warrants and one of the kids, an 11-month-old child, was taken into custody.

Investigators were told Doodhnaught fled with the baby, police said.
