Nasty fall sitting comes to an end as House of Commons adjourns for six weeks

Members of Parliament are poised to start a six-week Christmas break.

All parties have agreed to adjourn the House of Commons Thursday, after one more question period.

The House is not scheduled to resume business until Jan. 30.

Government House leader Peter Van Loan says much has been accomplished during the fall sitting, which he describes as workmanlike, orderly and aimed at goosing economic growth.

But opposition parties say it’s been time wasted on peripheral issues, like the gun registry and a controversial omnibus crime bill.

And they say it’s exposed Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s willingness to use his long-sought majority to stifle debate.
