Western cities dominate Canada’s most dangerous list: Maclean’s

Canada’s west coast is home to some of the country’s most dangerous cities, according to an exclusive new study by Maclean’s magazine.

Prince George, B.C., topped the list as the most crime-riddled city, with a mark of 114 per cent above the national crime score.

In second place is Victoria, with a ranking of 75 per cent above the national average. Saskatoon, SK., and Red Deer, Alta., aren’t far behind with scores of 72 and 71 per cent respectively. Rounding out the top five most dangerous cities is Regina at 67 per cent.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ontario can lay claim to almost all of the country’s safest cities. Caledon is ranked as Canada’s safest city, with a mark of 59 per cent below the national crime score.

Centre Wellington and Halton Region are a close second and third, with scores of 56 per cent and 55 per cent. Nottawasaga, ON, and Levis tied for the final spot with a score of 49 per cent below the national average.

Toronto’s overall crime score ranking is number 52, exactly where it was in 2000.

For this study, Maclean’s used the Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index and also tracked trends by commissioning from StatsCan a run of six indicator crime statistics.
