Enbridge fined in fatal 2003 explosion

A judge has fined Enbridge Gas $700,000 for an explosion in Etobicoke that killed seven people.
On April 24, 2003, a construction backhoe at a site on Bloor Street West near Kipling Avenue ruptured a gas line that had not been properly marked.
The blast levelled a strip mall, damaged nearby buildings and killed seven people.
The gas giant pleaded guilty to violating regulations under the technical standards and safety act and was fined $700,000 in an Old City Hall court Friday.
Precision Utility Ltd., the Mississauga company responsible for marking the gas lines, was fined $200,000.
On top of the fines, Judge Robert Bigelow imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge under the provincial offences act. The money goes toward a provincial government fund to help victims of crime.
In October 2006, excavator Warren Bitulithic Ltd. pleaded guilty under the same regulation and was fined $225,000.
