8 workers fired from Pickering nuclear station get jobs back

Eight workers at the Pickering nuclear station who were fired for alleged drug use in November have been given their jobs back.

The Ontario Power Generation (OPG) fired 11 workers in November for alleged drug-related activities. Eight of them were reinstated on Dec. 23. In a memo, OPG President and CEO Tom Mitchell said “appropriate labour processes were followed and have now concluded.”

The cases of the three remaining workers who won’t be back on the job didn’t go to arbitration.

The employees, who were described as support and cleaning staff, allegedly misused company computers to send emails about illegal drug-related activities. They were officially fired for violating the company’s code of business conduct.

Charges weren’t laid and OPG said safety at the facility wasn’t compromised.
