Woman’s body found on Queen’s Sandringham estate

British police are investigating after a woman’s body was found on Queen Elizabeth’s rural estate northeast of London.

A dog walker reportedly made the discovery in the village of Anmer, about 185 kilometres northeast of London, on New Year’s Day. The village is part of the Queen’s 20,000-acre Sandringham summer estate—parts of which are open to the public.

Police are treating the discovery of the body as a murder and are checking missing persons cases in other parts of England for possible connections. It’s not known if the victim was killed at the scene or if her body was left there. No information about the woman has been released.

Buckingham Palace is referring all questions on the case to police.

Anmer sits about five kilometres from Sandringham House, where Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and their family held New Year’s celebrations. The Queen hosts family Christmas celebrations there. The royals also hold shooting parties and ride horses at the estate.

It was already a difficult holiday season for the royals after Prince Philip was taken to hospital on Dec. 23 after suffering chest pains. He was treated for a blocked coronary artery. He was released in time to attend a New Year’s Day church service at the estate.
