New Toronto slogan among recommendations in city report

Diversity may be our strength but, perhaps soon, not Toronto’s slogan.

Coun. Peter Milczyn, chair of the city’s planning and growth management committee, presented a report to his fellow members Thursday proposing a number of changes to Toronto’s Official Plan.

The plan, a land-use strategy adopted in 2006 which guides growth in the city, is now under a mandatory five-year review.

“The [review] provides an opportunity for the city … to address shortfalls in policy and outcomes and pursue new and innovative initiatives,” the 43-page report Bolder and Brighter says.

Pedestrian-only streets, designing better lighting at night, incentives for preserving heritage buildings and replacing the current slogan, “Diversity Our Strength,” are among its recommendations.

Ahead of any formal process, CityNews viewers tweeted their ideas for a new slogan: “Detroit Junior,” “Toronto, city of two Fords” and “Toronto: The World Lives Here.”

Milczyn’s report was forwarded to city staff for further study and could be considered by city council as early as Feb. 6.
