Wind, snow wallop southern Ontario

Flurries continued in parts of southern Ontario Wednesday morning after a localized lake-effect band dumped some 20 centimetres of snow on the Barrie area overnight.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning 10 centimetres could fall in areas south of Georgian Bay Wednesday morning and gusty winds could reduce visibility.

“Cold northwest winds blowing over the relatively warm waters off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are generating several lake effect snow bands this morning,” the agency said.

“Motorists are advised to use caution as visibilities may be suddenly reduced to less than half a kilometre in the heavier flurries.”

In Toronto, the temperature plunged nine degrees Tuesday night as winds gusted near 75 kilometres per hour at Pearson.

“Here in the city of Toronto what everybody’s talking about is those winds that we saw through the overnight period,” said CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine.

Wednesday’s high is -4 C, with an average windchill of -10 C. The evening low is -8 C.
