Christopher Plummer, ‘Monsieur Lazhar’ get Oscar nods

The 84th Academy Awards nominations have been announced, and Canadian actor Christopher Plummer as well as the Quebec film Monsieur Lazhar got the Oscar nod.

The nominations were announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Plummer was nominated in the best supporting actor category for his role in Beginners, in which he plays an ailing widower who comes out of the closet after his wife dies. The 82-year-old actor, who recently won a Golden Globe award for the role, has never won an Oscar.

Quebec filmmaker Philippe Falardeau nabbed an Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film, Monsieur Lazhar, about a group of Montreal elementary students grappling with the death of their teacher.

It’s up against Belgium’s Bullhead, Israel’s Footnote, Poland’s In Darkness and Iran’s A Separation, which won the Golden Globe for best foreign-language film earlier this month.

Director Martin Scorsese’s Paris adventure Hugo leads the Academy Awards with 11 nominations, among them for best picture and for directing. The Artist had the second most nominations with 10 nods.

Other movies nominated in the best picture category include: the silent film The Artist; the family drama The Descendants; the Sept. 11 tale Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close; the Deep South drama The Help; the romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris; the sports tale Moneyball; the family chronicle The Tree of Life; and the World War I epic War Horse.

The nominees for best actress in a leading role are: Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs; Viola Davis in The Help; Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady; Michelle Williams, My Week with Marilyn.

The nominees for best actor in a leading role are: Demian Bichir in A Better Life, George Clooney in The Descendents, Jean Dujardin in The Artist, Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Brad Pitt in Moneyball.

The nominees for best supporting actress are: Octavia Spencer, The Help, Berenice Bejo, The Artist; Jessica Chastain, The Help; Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs; and Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids.

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be hosted by comedian Billy Crystal, will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
