Police announce more charges against Stanley Cup riot suspects; ask for public’s help

Vancouver police have announced the Crown has approved 11 more charges against five people suspected of taking part in the Stanley Cup riot last June.

Insp. Les Yeo said Tuesday the youngest is a 17-year-old boy from Langley, B.C., and that the charges range from participating in a riot, and assault to break and enter and mischief.

Yeo said while thousands of people were involved in the mayhem in downtown Vancouver, there were also some Good Samaritans who tried to protect the city.

During a news conference, police showed video of a group of people who beat a man trying to stop rioters from smashing windows.

“Despite viewing thousands of hours of video and hundreds of criminal acts, investigators were sickened by what they watched as Robert MacKay was swarmed and beaten and pepper sprayed while he lay on the ground,” Yeo said.

He said the Vancouver Police Department has added more photos and video on its website to help people identify suspects.

The new charges bring to 43 the number of people who have now been charged, out of the 100 suspects that police have recommended charges against.

The June 15 riot broke out when thousands of people gathered downtown to watch the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks on giant TV screens during the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
