Calgary woman beaten in Mexico recovering from surgery

A woman is recovering from reconstructive surgery at a Calgary hospital, after suffering a brutal beating at the hands of a stranger while on vacation in Mexico with her husband earlier this month.

Sheila Nabb, 37, had extensive surgery on her face on Saturday, which the doctors say was successful. She’s recovering in an intensive care unit, Alberta Health Services said.

“Although she is still sedated, she has been very responsive and we are happy to see small improvements every day,” the provincial health agency said in a release on Thursday on behalf of her husband.

On Jan. 20, Nabb was found lying in a pool of blood in a hotel elevator of the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay in the resort town of Mazatlan.

Nabb had several bones broken in her face, had to have her mouth wired shut and was placed in a medically induced coma for several days. She was flown back to Calgary on Jan. 27 and taken to a hospital there.

On that same day, Jose Ramon Acosta Quintero admitted to the beating and was charged with attempted murder by Mexican authorities.

Nabb’s husband Andrew said in the release Thursday, “Sheila’s injuries were very serious and she has a long recovery ahead, but we are looking forward to having her back home where she belongs.”

He also thanked Canadians for their support and well wishes.
