A vigil was held Friday night for a 29-year-old man shot dead by police earlier that day.
The man died after police shot him in East York, near Danforth and Coxwell avenues, on Friday morning, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirms.
A group calling itself Angels of Justice held a vigil at the corner of Queen Street and Coxwell Avenue on Friday night.
The victim was identified as Michael Elgion. He appeared to have just come out of the nearby East General Hospital. One witness reported he was wearing a hospital gown.
Police said they got into a confrontation with Elgion, who was allegedly holding a pair of scissors in each hand, outside a home on Milverton Boulevard around 10 a.m.
“At some point, the man was fatally shot,” SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said.
“We’ve got investigators interviewing witnesses and our forensics guys are here; they’re going to take photographs and measurements and collect evidence.”
Elgion had no vital signs when paramedics arrived and took him to St. Michael’s Hospital.
An officer was taken to East General Hospital with minor injuries.
Milverton was closed from Woodington to Glebemount while police investigated.
