Brandy & Monica team up 14 years after ‘The Boy is Mine’

It has been 14 years since Monica and Brandy collaborated on the hit The Boy is Mine but the duo is trying to recapture the magic with a new single, It All Belongs to Me.

“This experience was like we didn’t miss a beat.  It seems as though we have been singing in a group all of our lives.  So it just felt great to get back in the studio with her to do such a completely different song.  And it just felt like magic in the studio,” said Brandy.

Brandy spent Thursday with Monica rehearsing the new song before a Saturday night debut of it at the annual Pre-Grammy Gala.

The Pre-Grammy Gala is a black-tie event thrown by legendary music executive Clive Davis.  Davis launched the soiree in 1976 — shortly after founding Arista — to avoid the crush of label after-parties.

Davis produced the The Boy is Mine which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks and won the Grammy for R&B Performance by A Duo or Group in 1999.  As for this year’s Grammys, Brandy, Monica, and Clive Davis are all in agreement about one person who should take home a Grammy — British singer Adele.

“I definitely think that Adele should take home a few Grammys this year.  She’s amazing.  I love her.  She has inspired so many people, and she’s a true artist.  Real music.  Real passion.  Soul.  My daughter loves her.  My daughter is only nine so I love what she does to her spirit.  To be so young and I’m just really rooting for her,” said Brandy.

Monica was in agreement, saying  “when it comes to the singing Adele takes over your soul when she sings and that’s something you always fought for, real music and people really connecting with the voice and the people.

And I think what she represents is amazing.  And it helps in continuing in what we do and what we’re fighting for and what believe in as far as music is concerned.”

Clive Davis stated “this is the year of Adele,” adding, “There’s no question about that with no disrespect to any other nomination.  Single-handedly, the volume that her album has achieved selling in the United State almost 7 million copies with an equal number outside the United States.  It has helped us rebound as an industry.  We’re now selling more in this past year than we did in the year before.  And it’s also been good to counter this trend which is good in a certain quotient but to have everything electronic, to have everything dance, isn’t healthy.  She stands for great songs, great artistry.  So on every level this has been extremely beneficial for all of us in music”.

The Pre-Grammy Gala will take place Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  The Grammys will be held the following night at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
