David Mirvish named University of Guelph chancellor

Theatre producer and arts patron David Mirvish has been named the next chancellor at the University of Guelph.

He will be installed as chancellor at a ceremony in June.

“It’s an honour and privilege to be asked to serve as chancellor,” Mirvish said in a statement.

As part of the volunteer position, Mirvish will preside at convocations, confer all university degrees, act as an ambassador and represent the school’s interests to all government levels.

“David is a cultural icon and leader,” university president Alastair Summerlee said in a statement.

“He has been a dominant force in Canada’s artistic community for decades and possesses great vision, ingenuity, imagination and enthusiasm.”

Mirivish followed in his later father Ed’s footsteps, taking over a slew of Toronto theatres, including the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre, Ed Mirvish Theatre (formerly the Canon Theatre) and Panasonic Theatre.

David Mirvish, who has been named to the Order of Ontario and to the Order of Canada, will take over the chancellor position from Pamela Wallin.
