Grow-op found in Scarborough townhouse

Investigators are trying to find the people behind a marijuana grow operation discovered in a townhouse near Neilson Road and Finch this week. Police say the illegal outfit posed a serious hazard to neighbours.

Members of Toronto Police’s clandestine laboratory unit executed a search warrant at the Malvern address on Wednesday and found 600 pot plants with an estimated street value of $600,000.

Police say there were extensive electrical alterations made inside the townhouse that posed a “serious fire hazard” and there were no working smoke detectors in the home. Toronto Hydro was called in to disconnect the rigged electrical system.

“This type of situation is very concerning to police, as it put the safety of numerous people in jeopardy,” Toronto Police said in a news release. “The home was one of many units within a townhome complex, and the situation could have been disastrous for numerous unsuspecting residents had fire broken out.”

No arrests have been made but the investigation continues.

Authorities are urging anyone with information on this case, or anyone who suspects a grow-op in their community to call Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
