Ent & the City: Feb. 16-23, 2012

This city has something different to do every night. Here are some picks to help you navigate the social jungle that is Toronto.

Music
TWELVE: The Wavelength 12th Anniversary Festival
Feb. 16-19
Various locations downtown.

Not only is The Wavelength on the cutting edge of independent Toronto music scene, it in many ways defines it. Most artists agree that this festival is not as much about the business as it is about the music.
Cost: $36 for all-access pass

Music
Hip-Hop Karaoke-5-Year Anniversary
Friday, Feb. 17.
Revival, 783 College Street, Toronto.
This is my secret obsession. As a guy who grew up on hip hop the idea of the music having its own karaoke night seemed a little odd to me, but if you give it a shot you’ll be hooked. The performers range from die hard rap music fans to Bay Street lawyers. No attitude, no frills, no gimmicks. Just a general love fest for hip hop with all kinds of people. I should point out this round of karaoke features PHIFE DAWG (A Tribe Called Quest) and CHIP FU (Fu-Schnickens) who will guarantee a full house.
Cost: $15 before 11 p.m.

Theatre
Obeah Opera
Feb. 22- March 4
918 Bathurst.St, Toronto

The description of this play does sound a little off. However, most of my theatre-loving friends have been buzzing about this production. “Obeah Opera tells a story of life and work among women silenced by the most infamous ‘witch-hunt’ in history. Tituba and a handful of Caribbean women imported as slaves into the American colony of Salem are arrested and accused of practicing obeah.”
Cost: $30

Theatre
Into the Heights
Runs until Sunday, Feb. 19
Toronto Centre for The Arts, 5040 Yonge Street

Though most critics are divided about this production, everyone I know who has seen it has been very impressed. Some refer to this as ”Nouveau Broadway” or the way I like to put it, not your parents’ Broadway. Catch it while you can. There is some great footage here

Participating Cineplex movie theatres
Talk about a perfect Family Day weekend activity: see the original The Muppet Movie from 1979! In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a synopsis according to the Cineplex website: “Kermit and his new found friends trek across America to find success in Hollywood, but a frog-legs merchant is after Kermit.” It’s not easy being green.

Other
Family Day: Funnovation
Monday, Feb, 20
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The only problem with Family Day is that it’s the middle of winter and there are limited family things to do, but this Funnovation looks fun. “Old Navy is hosting Funnovation Imaginarium parties at select Etobicoke, Ottawa and Calgary stores. The events offer kids a jam-packed afternoon of creative and fun activities where they can make anything they can imagine.
