Alcohol likely a factor in fatal snowmobile crash: OPP

An Oakville man who crashed his snowmobile into a rock and died early Sunday morning may have been drunk at the time, the Ontario Provincial Police say.

Police found the victim near Bigwin Island in Lake of Bays township around 7 a.m. They say he was thrown from his sled when he hit a rock cut.

“At this point in the investigation it would appear that alcohol is a contributing factor,” the OPP said in a statement.

OPP named the victim as David Stott of Oakville but CityNews has confirmed the man’s name is Alex Stott.

They learned Stott was missing two hours earlier when they were called about another member of his group, Matthew Deleonardis, who had been hurt on the island.

Deleonardis, a 25-year-old Bolton resident, was taken to Huntsville District Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
