U of T teaching assistants could strike Friday

A strike deadline is drawing near for more than 4,000 teaching assistants at the University of Toronto, as they prepare to walk off the job this Friday.

Members of CUPE 3902 – which includes teaching assistants, graduate-student instructors and lab demonstrators – and U of T brass will be meeting Tuesday to try to negotiate another contract, after the employees rejected the latest offer by a vote of 96 per cent.

The union says its key issues are tutorial and lab sizes, research support and pay rates.

A strike could affect 70,000 students at all three campuses

The assistants have been without a contract since April 30, 2011.
