Ent & the City: Feb 24 – March 1, 2012

Here are my entertainment picks for the week of Feb. 24-March 1. In addition to watching movies and theatre, I’ll also be live tweeting during the Oscars on Sunday, Feb 26th here on CityNews.ca.

Theatre
War Horse
Begins Feb 28th
The Princess of Wales Theatre, 300 King Street West, Toronto
The Mirvish’s have another hit on their hands with War Horse. Tickets have been selling swiftly for this big budget musical that has already picked up 6 Tony awards. According to its website: “As World War I begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France.  He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in No Man’s Land.  But Albert cannot forget Joey and, though not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home”
Cost: $59-$130

Dance
Entity
Fleck Dance Theatre, 207 Queens Quay West Toronto
Feb. 28-March 3; times vary.
Many people think Harbourfront Centre is a cultural hub during the summer only, but some of the best programming actually happens in the winter months, including some of the best dance performances in Toronto. Entity is a dance show featuring music by Coldplay and Massive Attack collaborator Jon Hopkins. It is choreographed by Britain’s Wayne McGregor, who is poised to create a dance for 2,000 people to perform in London’s Trafalgar Square as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Cost: $36-$45

Movies
Snow
Friday, Feb. 24
Cumberland cinema, 159 Cumberland Street Toronto
It’s tough to track the success of most Canadian Film Directors. Many find work in other aspects of the industry just to stay afloat.  I’ve followed the work of director Rohan Fernando since he premiered his NFB documentary Cecil’s Journey here in Toronto at FILMI!, a fest of South Asian films. His first feature film is a delicate and interesting piece of filmmaking, telling stories about Canada through the eyes of immigrants.
Cost: $7 to $10

Movies
Goon
Starts Feb 24
Various movie theatres
As we head into the NHL’s trade deadline, the timing of this film could not be better. The movie is not ‘Slapshot’  which is in many ways a good thing.  Instead, Goon is a stand-out comedy for the right reason: it’s straight-up funny.  The only problem is, with hockey as a theme it will not get the eyeballs it deserves, but here is your chance to prove me wrong.
Cost: General admission $13

Music
Big Tim Rush & One Direction
Feb 26, 2012
Air Canada Centre, 40 Bay St., Toronto
If I were to tell you I was a fan of either of these bands I would by lying. However, if I were to tell you that these bands are a sign of what’s to come for pop music, I’d be on the right path.  One Direction just picked up the Brit Award for Best British Single for the song ‘What Makes You Beautiful’  and Big Time Rush has a pre-teen cult following that has their fans labeled as ‘Rushers’.  Add to all of this the bright young star Jackson Guthy and you’ve got the type of concert that will be full of screams, cheers and youthful charm.
Cost: $24.50-$49.50
