Eastbound 401 reopens after crash injures 3

A multi-vehicle rush hour accident closed all lanes of the eastbound 401 between Mississauga and Mavis Roads for several hours on Monday.

It has since reopened.

OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford told CityNews that five vehicles were involved in the chain reaction crash.

Three people were hurt, with one person sustaining life-threatening injuries.

“It happens not often, but when it does, you get serious types of collisions like this,” said Woodford.

An investigation is underway into what caused the accident.

Meanwhile, it’s turned out to be a dangerous night on GTA roadways.

A crash sent one person to hospital at Davis Drive and Prospect Street in Newmarket.

The victim, a 25-year-old male, was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre in serious condition. The area is expected to be closed for several hours as police investigate.

And emergency crews were called to Brittania Road and Highway 407 for a single vehicle crash.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to an area hospital where he is now in stable condition, after his car left the roadway, crashing 50 ft. below on a nearby embankment.

“Luckily the water level wasn’t higher because normally…this is probably filled with water,” said P.C. George Tudos, Peel regional police.

Officials say a medical issue may be to blame for the crash.

In addition, a shopkeeper has some serious clean-up to do after a car crashed through his magic shop on Dufferin Street at Castlefield Avenue. No one was injured in the incident, and police say neither speed or alcohol are factors.
