Erin Mielzynski wins her 1st gold World Cup

Canada’s Erin Mielzynski won her first World Cup race on the weekend in Germany.

The 21-year-old skier from Guelph, Ont., is the first Canadian to capture gold in the slalom since Betsy Clifford of Ottawa did in 1971.

Mielzynski’s previous best results were a pair of 13th place finishes last year.

She told Breakfast Television’s Kevin Frankish she owes it all to her her hometown.

“I want to say thank you to everyone for everything,” she said. “Guelph — they — helped me through all my years in school …I guess this one’s for you.”

She currently lives in Collingwood.
