Richmond Hill house fire prompts closure on Major MacKenzie

A house fire forced authorities to shut down a section of Major MacKenzie Drive in Richmond Hill early Monday morning. The busy road has since reopened.

Crews were called to a home on Ruggles Avenue, just east of Yonge Street, around 3:15 a.m. The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

There was concern when the homeowner couldn’t be found, but authorities located the person in Niagara Falls.

There’s no word yet on a damage estimate or a cause.

And fire crews were called out to another blaze near 16th Avenue and Main Street in Markham around 5 a.m.

Two people were inside the home when the flames broke out, including a man who relies on an oxygen tank. He was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

The house fire was extinguished quickly.
