Founder of iconic Steve’s Music dies

The founder of iconic Toronto store Steve’s Music has passed away.

Steve Kirman died in Montreal over the weekend from an undisclosed illness. He was 65.

He was only 18 when he started his business in Montreal in 1965 with $800 in his pocket.  The business expanded to the Queen West location a short time later.

Kirman was seen as an innovator in the music-store business, revolutionizing the “hands-on” approach to selling guitars and other instruments.

In addition to being a destination for local and international musicians, it also was the site of the G20 riots in June 2010 where a police cruiser was burned outside its front doors – causing damage to store windows and its sign.

He was laid to rest Tuesday in Montreal.
